Surrender Certificate

Also called: Indian passport surrender certificate

A surrender certificate is the document issued by the High Commission of India confirming that an Indian passport has been surrendered after its holder acquired another citizenship. Indian citizens who acquire another citizenship, such as British, are required under Indian law to surrender their Indian passport. Depending on the date and the rules in force, the surrendered passport may be annotated instead of a separate certificate being issued.

Who needs it

Former Indian citizens who have naturalised as British or another nationality, especially those planning to apply for OCI. The surrender certificate is generally part of a Fresh OCI file, so surrender usually comes first. Anyone who naturalised without a recorded surrender typically starts with surrender, then applies for OCI. The two can be prepared together as one coordinated package.
