What “OCI renewal” means now

Since June 2026, a new passport no longer means a new OCI booklet. If your US passport has been renewed or replaced, you keep your existing OCI card — what changes is the passport it is linked to.

The update is filed online on the official Government of India OCI system. Once it is approved, your OCI record shows the new passport, and an e-OCI — the digital copy for your phone — can be issued.

The update is generally made within 90 days of your new passport's issue date: the date printed on the passport, not the day it arrived.
