Check your OCI application status (2026) — UK guide

Your OCI application status is held on the official Government of India OCI system under your application or file reference, and the card stage is tracked by VFS Global. This guide shows where to check each one, what the common status wording means in plain English, what usually happens next at each stage, and how Matrix Solutions can check the status for you — free, on WhatsApp.

How to check your OCI application status, step by step

  • Find your reference first. It is the application or file reference printed on your OCI acknowledgement, your appointment paperwork or the email sent when the application was submitted.
  • For the application itself, use the status enquiry on the official Government of India OCI services portal and enter that reference with the applicant's date of birth. This is the record that moves through under process, granted and printed.
  • For the card or document once it leaves the mission, use VFS Global's own tracking with the reference on your VFS receipt. The portal shows the decision; VFS shows the movement.
  • Check no more than once or twice a week. The wording is updated in batches, so daily checking shows the same screen and tells you nothing new.
  • If the reading is unclear, send us the reference or a screenshot on WhatsApp and we tell you which stage you are at and what happens next.

How an OCI status check works

  • Each OCI application is tracked on the official Government of India OCI system under its application or file reference — the number on your acknowledgement or appointment paperwork.
  • You do not need to work through the system yourself. Send us your reference, or a screenshot of the status, on WhatsApp — we find your status, tell you which stage you are at, and explain what usually comes next.
  • If Matrix Solutions prepared your file, we already hold your reference — a quick message is all we need.

OCI status wording in plain English

  • Under process or under review — the file has been received and is being checked by the relevant authority. This is usually the longest stage and can sit unchanged for weeks while checks are ongoing.
  • Processed or granted — the OCI has been approved on the system and the record is live. From here an e-OCI can be generated for your phone.
  • Printed — the card stage has started. It does not yet mean the card has left.
  • Dispatched — the document has moved to delivery or collection; VFS or courier tracking takes over from here.
  • Document received — depending on where it appears, this can mean your file has arrived at the mission for processing, or that the finished document has arrived for collection. The date and the surrounding entries make the difference — send us a screenshot and we tell you which.
  • A status that does not change for some time may still be normal, especially during busy travel seasons or when the High Commission workload is high.

Which stage are you at? The next step for each

  • Not applied yet — there is no status to check until the OCI has been applied for. See Fresh OCI (£125 per applicant).
  • New passport, OCI not yet linked — a status check will not fix this. Within 90 days of the new passport's issue date, the OCI needs an OCI Link with the current passport (£100, online). Past 90 days, our fee is £125 (the OCI Passport Details Update, e-OCI included) and the late-update penalty is waived for updates received by 31 December 2026.
  • Name, date of birth or other detail changed, or card lost or damaged and the OCI not yet linked to your current passport — this is an OCI Passport Details Update (£125, e-OCI included). If a lost or damaged card's OCI is already linked to your current passport, the £50 e-OCI replaces the card instead.
  • Status shows processed or granted — the record is live, so an e-OCI can be generated for your phone (£50 standalone, +£25 as an add-on to an OCI order, or included with the OCI Passport Details Update).
  • Status has not moved and travel is close — send us a screenshot and your travel date; we check the stage and talk through the realistic options.

Status stuck, or travelling soon?

Send us a screenshot of the status, your reference number and the date of submission on WhatsApp. We check whether the message matches the expected stage, tell you if anything looks missing, and guide you on the next sensible step. We cannot speed up government processing or override High Commission decisions — but we can tell you honestly where the file stands.

Cannot log in to your OCI account?

Many OCI accounts were registered years ago with an email or password long forgotten. We recover or register the account through your own email — you simply forward the one-time code — and any login details are used once and never stored. Account recovery is included in our e-OCI service (£50), which generates your e-OCI once your OCI is linked with your current passport.

What we cannot do

  • We cannot speed up processing, influence a decision or promise a date — those sit with the High Commission and the Government of India.
  • We cannot confirm an outcome before the official system shows it.
  • We do not ask for your passwords or one-time codes in chat beyond the account-recovery step you choose, and we never store OCI account logins.

Important notes

  • Send us your reference and we check it for you — and avoid third-party websites that ask for passwords, OTPs or payment details.
  • Status wording is set by the official Government of India OCI system and may update later than the actual file movement.
  • Final processing, delivery and decisions sit with the relevant authority, VFS or courier provider.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my OCI application status?
Find the application or file reference on your OCI acknowledgement or appointment paperwork, then use the status enquiry on the official Government of India OCI system with the applicant's date of birth. Once the card is dispatched, VFS or courier tracking takes over. Or send us the reference, or a screenshot, on WhatsApp and we read it for you.
What does 'under process' mean?
It means the file has been received and is being checked by the relevant authority. It is usually the longest stage and can sit unchanged for weeks while checks are ongoing, which is not necessarily a problem. The next stages are processed or granted, then printed, then dispatched. Send us a screenshot and we explain what comes next.
How long after approval is the card dispatched?
The gap is not fixed: printing, delivery and timing sit with the relevant authority, VFS or courier. After approval the status shows processed or granted, then printed, meaning the card stage has started but the card has not left yet. Dispatched means it has moved to delivery or collection. Once granted, an e-OCI can be generated for your phone meanwhile.
How long does an OCI take from the UK?
Processing is typically 25 to 40 days on the official system once the file is submitted, with card printing and delivery after that. Busy travel seasons run longer. We prepare and submit within 24 to 48 hours of receiving your documents.
How long is OCI taking now?
Current cases are generally landing in the usual 25 to 40 day range on the official system, though individual files sit longer when checks are ongoing. Send us your reference and submission date and we tell you how your case compares.
How to update OCI card with a new UK passport?
Within 90 days of the new passport it is the £100 OCI Link, completed online. Past 90 days it is the £125 OCI Passport Details Update, with the late-update penalty waived for updates received by 31 December 2026.
Can I travel to India without updating my OCI card?
Many travellers do while an update is in progress, carrying the e-OCI, the new passport and the old passport where it was returned clipped, with our acknowledgement letter once submitted. Entry decisions rest with the authorities, so send us your dates and we confirm your position.
Which reference number should I use for OCI tracking?
Use the reference shown on your OCI acknowledgement or appointment paperwork. If Matrix Solutions prepared your file, we already have it — just message us. Otherwise send a screenshot and we identify the correct number.
My OCI status has not changed for a while. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily. OCI files can stay at one stage while checks are ongoing. If you have urgent travel or the wording looks unusual, send us a screenshot for review.
Can Matrix Solutions speed up my OCI application?
No. We can read the status, check whether anything looks missing and advise on the next step, but processing speed sits with the relevant authority.
My status says processed or granted — what now?
The record is live, so an e-OCI can be generated for your phone. If your OCI is linked with your current passport, we can usually deliver the e-OCI within 24 hours of order confirmation.
I cannot log in to my OCI account — can you help?
Yes. We recover or register the account through your own email — you forward the one-time code — and never store the login. This is included in the £50 e-OCI service.
Can you check the status if Matrix Solutions did not prepare my file?
Yes — send a screenshot and your reference. We can explain the wording and the likely next step, though we will not have your file history unless you share it.
