Surrender of Indian Passport in the UK

Indian citizens who acquire foreign (e.g. British) citizenship are required under Indian law to surrender their Indian passport and obtain a renunciation certificate — the document issued by the High Commission of India confirming the passport has been given up. The certificate is also a pre-requisite for applying for Fresh OCI. Matrix Solutions prepares the application, books VFS, and tracks the process until your renunciation certificate is issued.

  • £100 service fee (standalone)
  • Renunciation certificate for Fresh OCI
  • Free rework if rejected on our error

Who needs to surrender

  • New British citizens

You have taken the citizenship oath and received a UK naturalisation certificate (or other foreign passport). Indian law requires surrender of your Indian passport.

  • Applying for OCI

A renunciation certificate (or an annotation on the surrendered Indian passport, depending on date and rules in force) is required before a Fresh OCI application can be submitted.

  • Long-overdue surrender

If you naturalised some time ago and have not yet surrendered, any applicable late fees are set by the Indian authorities and confirmed at VFS / the High Commission — not by Matrix Solutions. We prepare and submit your application.

What your fee includes

  • Completion of online surrender / renunciation forms via the official portal.
  • Document scan review and upload assistance, including affidavits and supporting paperwork.
  • VFS appointment booked at your nearest centre where required.
  • 24-hour preparation turnaround after we receive your documents.
  • Status tracking until your renunciation certificate is issued.
  • Free rework if rejection occurs due to our error.

What happens after payment

  1. Free document check

Send your Indian passport, UK naturalisation certificate, and current passport on WhatsApp. We confirm the route; any applicable late fees are set by the Indian authorities and confirmed at VFS / the High Commission.

  2. Personalised checklist

We send a tailored document list — including naturalisation certificate, current and old passports, address proof, and recent photos.

  3. Application preparation

Online surrender application completed, photo and signature formatted, and a VFS appointment booked at the correct centre for your postcode.

  4. Attend VFS

You attend VFS with the prepared file, carrying two identical recent photographs (35×45mm, British passport size) — we format these for you so they meet the specification. Your Indian passport is surrendered at the appointment.

  5. Renunciation certificate issued

The High Commission of India issues your renunciation certificate after processing — this is not same-day. Many clients apply for Fresh OCI straight after; we can prepare both packages together and time the appointments to minimise delays.

Government / VFS fees are paid separately by you at the appointment — see the fee table below.

What VFS collects on the day

Per applicant, payable directly to VFS Global at submission. Typical breakdown — your exact total is confirmed by VFS on the day.

Surrender certificate (all VFS fees included)£46.00

£46 covers everything — all VFS and courier charges are included.

These VFS / government fees are indicative. Your final amount may be higher if VFS charges for any optional extras on the day — such as photocopying, document printing, photo, SMS, or courier add-ons. The exact total is confirmed by VFS Global at submission.

These figures are illustrative and based on the current VFS schedule (including applicable taxes). Current fees apply on the day of submission and are paid directly to VFS Global — separately from the Matrix service fee.

Common questions

Do I need to surrender my Indian passport after becoming British?

Indian law requires surrender of the Indian passport after acquiring British (or other foreign) citizenship. A renunciation certificate follows, and it is also needed before a Fresh OCI application.

What is a renunciation certificate?

It is the document issued by the High Commission of India confirming that you have surrendered your Indian passport and given up Indian citizenship. It is issued after processing — not the same day as your VFS appointment — and is required before a Fresh OCI application.

Are there penalty fees for late surrender?

Any late-surrender fee is set by the Indian authorities and depends on your circumstances; it is confirmed at VFS / the High Commission, not by Matrix Solutions. Share your naturalisation date on WhatsApp and we help you prepare and submit.

Can I apply for Fresh OCI before my renunciation certificate arrives?

The surrender process needs to be completed first. Many clients combine both at the same VFS visit where possible, and we coordinate the timing.

Do I need to attend VFS in person?

In most cases, yes. We book the correct VFS centre and prepare the full submission package.
