NRI PAN card
Also called: PAN card for NRIs, Form 49AA
An NRI PAN card is a Permanent Account Number (PAN), the standard Indian tax identifier, issued to a non-resident Indian or foreign citizen of Indian origin. Non-residents apply on Form 49AA, which differs from Form 49A used by residents. Where applicable, an e-PAN is issued first, and the physical card can be posted to an address in the UK.
Who needs it
NRIs and OCI holders with financial links to India: buying or selling property, receiving rent, holding investments or bank accounts, or dealing with an inheritance. Each of these generally needs a PAN, so it is worth applying before the transaction rather than during it. OCI holders and foreign citizens of Indian origin use the same Form 49AA route. The e-PAN usually arrives in about two to three weeks, with the physical card posted after that.
