Aadhaar card information for UK NRIs and OCI cardholders

Aadhaar is India’s 12-digit national identity number. This page is general information only: Matrix Solutions does not offer Aadhaar enrolment or update services, because enrolment requires the applicant’s physical presence in India for in-person biometric verification, which cannot be completed overseas. For Aadhaar, we recommend the official UIDAI website or an authorised centre during your next trip to India. For other Indian documentation — passport renewal, OCI, and more — Matrix Solutions can help.

Applying for Aadhaar requires being in India

You cannot apply for Aadhaar from the UK or anywhere outside India — the enrolment process needs your physical presence in India for biometric verification. Enrolment involves capturing biometric data (fingerprints and an iris scan), which is done in person at an authorised centre. NRIs and OCI cardholders can enrol at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra during their stay in India, completing registration and biometric verification in person.

Frequently asked questions

Are NRIs and OCI cardholders eligible for an Aadhaar card?
Yes, both NRIs and OCI cardholders are generally eligible under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Amendment Regulations, 2024, provided they meet certain criteria.
What are the new Aadhaar rules for NRIs and OCIs?
The rules simplified enrolment with specific forms and valid Indian government-issued identity proof for financial transactions in India. NRIs generally use their valid Indian passport for enrolment; OCIs generally need to stay in India for at least 182 days in a calendar year to qualify.
Is Aadhaar required for NRIs and OCIs?
Aadhaar is generally not required for NRIs, but it may be needed for financial transactions in India. For OCIs it is optional, depending on need and eligibility.
What documents are needed for Aadhaar enrolment for NRIs?
NRIs can generally use their valid Indian passport as the sole identity proof. For those born on or after 1 October 2023, a birth certificate may also be required.
What forms should OCI cardholders use?
OCI cardholders aged 18 and over generally use Form 7; those under 18 generally use Form 8.
Is an email ID necessary for OCI cardholders?
A valid email ID is generally required. Applications without a valid email ID may not be accepted, as UIDAI does not support international phone numbers for SMS notifications.
How often do Aadhaar details need updating?
Under the latest amendment, Aadhaar holders, including NRIs, generally update their information once every 10 years — online or at an enrolment centre.
